What Is a TROPIC® Strap? The Original Basket-Weave Dive Strap

Genuine TROPIC® basket-weave rubber dive straps beaded with seawater

There are countless rubber watch straps, but only one is known the world over by its brand name. The TROPIC® strap was introduced in 1955 and has been a registered trademark ever since. Every genuine one carries the name embossed on the inside. Others copied the look so completely that many people began using “tropic” as a generic word for any basket-weave rubber strap. It is not one. There is a single original, and it is the one we make.

The original, since 1955

The TROPIC® strap arrived in the mid-1950s, just as the dive watch was coming of age, and quickly became standard issue on the era’s most important tool watches. Through the fifties, sixties, and seventies it was the rubber strap divers reached for. When Synchron acquired TROPIC® in 2003, it took ownership of the original company in full: the blueprints, the tooling, and the complete manufacturing heritage. That is why the strap you buy today is a continuation of the original, not a reproduction of it.

Worn by the watches that defined diving

The TROPIC® strap’s engineering DNA equipped some of the most storied dive watches ever made, among them the Rolex Submariner, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, and the Omega Seamaster 300. It also served as the official strap of the French Navy’s Tudor Submariners. No imitator can claim that lineage, because the lineage is not for sale. It belongs to the original tooling and the original name.

What makes a TROPIC® a TROPIC®: the weave

The signature is the cross-hatched, tapestry-like surface, and it is functional rather than decorative. The texture promotes airflow across the wrist to reduce heat and moisture. The pattern drains water quickly. Ribbed edges give the strap lateral structure without stiffness, and the tapered profile, thicker at the watch and narrowing toward the buckle, distributes weight naturally and reduces bulk at the clasp. The deeply embossed back adds comfort. Every element earns its place; the design was very well sorted from the start.

The rubber: made in Italy, engineered to last

The genuine TROPIC® is made in Italy from a proprietary vulcanised rubber compound, developed with additives that improve UV resistance, tensile strength, and resilience to heat and cold, all without losing suppleness. It is completely PFAS-free, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and 100% silicone-free. That matters: silicone straps, which most competitors use, attract dust, feel plasticky, and lack the structural integrity of natural rubber. The TROPIC® compound has none of those drawbacks.

Genuine versus imitation

The market is full of straps that copied the TROPIC® look. Telling the real one apart is simple. It has been a registered trademark since 1955. Synchron owns the original blueprints, the original tooling, and the brand itself. And every genuine strap has the name embossed on the inner side, exactly as it has since the beginning. If a strap does not carry that marking, it is not a TROPIC®, full stop.

Sizes and fit

The genuine TROPIC® strap is available in 20mm and 22mm lug widths. The 20mm tapers to a 16mm buckle and the 22mm tapers to 18mm, so the strap sits slim at the clasp. Usable length is 185mm with an overall length of 210mm, a comfortable fit for the vast majority of wrists.
